A lover of adventures since his school days, Partha was duly lapped up by some fellow lovers in his hometown Siliguri. The bustling business centre at the foothills already had a reputed and pioneering adventurers’ organisation – Siliguri Explorers’ Club. Partha joined it.
His love of nature did not go uninterrupted. He had to do an MBA after leaving college. He even joined the Mumbai corporate world. But his love refused to die.
Pallab – his childhood friend – was also carrying the same sort of love. The very thought of a formal education ultimately culminating in a 10 to 5 existence nearly choked him. He kept some secret escape routes open for himself – a modest SLR camera often his only companion – to the mountains and forests and other nameless non-descript places around. Just because they were there. And Naturebeyond started its journey in 2002.
Naturebeyond is not a mere tour operator. They feel honoured to invite tourists and travellers who value what Naturebeyond values most – a pure blend of passion and professionalism. Yes, they are always on for the regular tour programmes – perfectly packaged trips to mountains and forests, coasts and hill resorts. There is no compromise on comfort and other amenities.
But they are equally intent on giving a newer dimension to the very concept of tourism. The human landscape of a place is as important to us as the natural one.
Naturebeyond creates a space for you to interact with the village communities like never before. You also have surprise guests – all experts from various fields – to familiarise you with the place you are travelling around. There may be a botanist friend to introduce you to the flora of the area – a zoologist for the fauna - an ornithologist on a birding trip or an anthropologist to give you an overview of the indigenous people around. Even a senior monk from the local monastery may be invited to give you an idea of the monastic life.
They don’t believe in showcasing ethnic people in their traditional lifestyle. Rather they try to blend your space into theirs in such a way that you don’t only go back with some digital images on your camera. You go back only with a desire to come back again to a place that has already broadened your sense of the world.
You try to imagine a quiet garden at Beechwood in Darjeeling where the first tea seeds, brought from the Kumeon region in China, were sown by Dr. A. Campbell – the first superintendent of the sanatorium of Darjeeling – in 1841! The aroma of your morning cup of tea already makes you a part of history.
The great Himalayan chain has an incredible verity of feathered species. Your experience in birding gets more delightful as you notice the change in the altitude, climate and vegetation in different level.
Trekking in the Himalayas is a delightful experience as you walk past the quaint villages dotting the hill slopes, through the rhododendron groves in the high mountain ridges.
Rather be a sparrow than a snail! Just think about the earth beneath your feet, dear mountain bikers! Here is a chance to pedal off to your own space! Just bike around!
Pull in the clutch. Let off the gas. Pull on the shifter until you feel the click – or the earth beneath your wheels.
You open your eyes in a small and cosy bamboo cottage that smells of clay and cardamom. Just another morning in a timeless village where nothing happens otherwise
